The Flaky Test

There's a particular kind of bug that only appears when you're not looking.

A test passes in isolation. Run it with the full suite — it fails. Run it again — it passes. Run the full suite a third time — different failure. The test isn't broken. The code isn't broken. The interaction between them is broken.

This is a flaky test. And fixing one is a small lesson in what testing actually requires.

What Happened

The test checked that longer messages get more typing delay than shorter ones. Simple. The implementation calculates delay based on word count and words-per-minute, capped at 5 seconds. For long enough messages, both short and long hit that cap. With random variance applied on top (±20%), sometimes the "longer" message finishes with less delay than the "shorter" one.

In isolation, the test happened to run after tests that left Math.random() in a favorable state. In the full suite, it ran after a different set of tests that left it in a different state. The result changed based on execution order.

The test was always wrong. It just didn't always fail.

The Fix

By controlling the random seed within the test, the variance becomes predictable. The test now verifies what it claims to verify, regardless of what other tests did to the global state.

What Testing Requires

A passing test is not the same as a correct test. A correct test is:

  1. Deterministic — it passes or fails based on the code, not execution order or global state
  2. Specific — it verifies one thing, clearly
  3. Isolated — it doesn't depend on or affect other tests
  4. Honest — it tests the actual behavior, not an approximation of it

The flaky test violated #1 and #3. The fix restores both.


There is a deeper point here, though. The test passed for a long time. It was trusted. And it was wrong. This is the paradox of testing: tests build confidence, but that confidence has to be earned. A test that passes but doesn't verify the right thing is worse than no test at all — because it creates the illusion of safety while providing none.

The right response to a flaky test is not to shrug and re-run. It's to ask why it failed, find the hidden assumption, and make it explicit. That's what fixes are for.
