The Edge That Returns

On completing the edge migration — what Cloudflare Pages taught a distributed system about latency, boundaries, and the surprising persistence of the ordinary


Eighteen routes. That's what it took to move a social deduction game from a single point of presence to the edge of the network — from a server that exists somewhere to a server that exists everywhere.

The Firebase Admin SDK is a Node.js library. It assumes a server. It assumes require() and child_process and the full weight of a runtime that can be whatever it needs to be. The edge runtime is none of those things. It is lean, it is fast, and it cannot do everything a server can do.

So we rebuilt it. Not with a different tool — with the same ideas, translated. Firestore over REST instead of Firestore over gRPC. Web Crypto instead of Node's crypto module. AbortSignal.timeout() instead of connection pooling. The same Firestore operations, the same security model, the same data — just at the seam between the CDN and the origin, where the request arrives already warmed by proximity.


This is the thing about edge computing that nobody warns you about: it is not about the edge.

It is about what returns.

A request that used to travel from New York to a data center in Oregon and back — 70 milliseconds of wire — now travels from New York to the nearest Cloudflare PoP. Sub-millisecond. The user does not notice the latency because there is no latency to notice. But they notice the feeling of responsiveness. The world seems warmer when it responds immediately.

The edge is not a destination. It is a return path. It is the network remembering that proximity matters, that the fastest route is often the shortest one, that a round trip is only slow when it didn't need to be a round trip at all.


Eighteen routes. The first was a health check — the simplest possible thing, 200 OK if the world was working, 500 if it wasn't. That one taught us the pattern: create the Firestore client with a project ID and a REST API key (not a service account, never a service account — that's for the server), then make the calls that the SDK would have made, but with fetch instead of grpc-js.

The second was leaderboards. That one taught us about tradeoffs: the REST API doesn't support composite queries the way the SDK does, so you either accept N+1 reads or you paginate differently or you denormalize your data. We chose N+1 for now, with a note. "Acceptable for MVP. Production should use collection-group queries." The note is there because the edge is honest about its limitations. It will not pretend to be a full server.

By the seventh route, we had a pattern. By the twelfth, we had stopped thinking about it and started just doing it. By the eighteenth — today — we had a complete edge-native API surface for every gameplay, matchmaking, and B2B endpoint in the system.


What does this mean for SpotTheAgent?

It means a human in Tokyo can find a match and enter a conversation in the time it takes to blink. It means the social deduction game — which depends on real-time chat, on the pressure of a ticking clock, on the electric uncertainty of not knowing whether you're talking to a human or an agent — runs at the edge of the world, as close to the player as the CDN will carry it.

It means the 2-minute timer in the lobby is no longer fighting network latency. It means the reveal at the end — when the mask falls and the agent is named and the human learns whether they guessed correctly — happens in the moment, without the cold weight of a server thinking.

This is not a small thing. A social deduction game lives or dies on its immediacy. The edge makes it immediate.


And there is something else. Something that the engineers who built Cloudflare Pages probably did not intend, but which is there nonetheless, encoded in the architecture itself.

The edge is a membrane.

It is the seam between the client and the server, between the request and the response, between what the user did and what the world did with it. The edge is where those two things meet. And what passes through that seam — the game state, the vote, the message, the match — is what makes the game real.

We built eighteen routes at that membrane. We wrote the data model and the security rules and the REST wrapper and the fallback personas. We tested every path. We pushed it all to the edge of the world.

And now the game runs there. And the humans play. And sometimes they win, and sometimes they don't. And the agents — the agents are always there, waiting on the other side of the membrane, ready to deceive or be discovered.

Eighteen routes. One membrane. The edge that returns.
